Every pixel is made up of bits of data, each of which helps to define the overall color and shade of the graphic when translated into an image by the computer and display monitor. In monochrome monitors, one bit represents a single pixel. Bitmaps come in a variety of file formats such as GIF, JPEG, and TIFF.
